Henri Jean-Joseph Ubaghs (1852-1937)

Jean Ubaghs was born in Liège where he studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts and later became a professor at the same Académie. On April 8th, 1886, Ubaghs married Clara Marie Albertine L’hoest from Liège. Ubaghs painted this same Indonesian model more often as well as another model from the Orient. He is not known to have travelled outside Europe or even outside Belgium.

Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684-1743)
Chatelain's historical altas included Adrien Reland's 1715 map. Chatelain proudly calls attention to the map's Japanese model, but he says nothing of its true origin. Chatelain's historical atlas was one of the encyclopedic works of the French Enlightment, published in large editions and widely distributed.
Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur de Merprès (1880-1958)
Le Mayeur, born and trained in Brussels, settled in Bali in 1932. There he painted mainly one person: Ni Nyoman Pollok, a Legong dancer famous for her beauty and dance throughout the Indonesian archipelago, whom Le Mayeur married in 1935. In his early paintings of Ni Pollok, she is sometimes accompanied by her nieces and situated in their garden at Sanur, Bali. These can be considered highlights of Indonesian impressionism and are of international art historical importance. In 1958 Le Mayeur returned to Brussels, where he died that same year.
